LSP4 Employability

Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) is the approach to language teaching which targets specific needs of learners for whom the language is an essential tool for their education, training or work. LSP programmes focus on developing students’ communicative competence in a specific academic or practical field, such as law, natural science, technology, engineering, business, tourism…

Employability refers to abilities and skills that allow one to be employed. Employability skills are the essential skills, personal qualities and values that enable you to thrive in any workplace. These are also called ‘enterprise skills’, ‘communication skills’ or ‘workplace skills

LSP4Employability is an approach to teaching/learning languages aimed at enabling learners to gain specific language abilities and additional skills (both hard and soft) that enhance their employability. It focuses on such a selection of topics/teaching materials/activities as are essential for enhancing effective communications-related activities in the work environment, while taking into account cross-cultural communication issues and soft skills.

For teachers and learners

LSP education and a great variety of needs of both students and employers demand personalized approach. Although the abundance of teaching materials available on the market cover multiple fields of linguistic study, the recommendations expressed by the employers highlight the need to use authentic materials, collaboration, specialized vocabulary, following current job market trends during LSP classes. On top of that, the covid-19 pandemic, lockdowns and a growing popularity of online teaching show that textbooks become obsolete. All these mean that, in practice, LSP teachers end up creating their own teaching materials using tools and sources available online.

The exercises presented below were created by LSP teachers from three universities based on recommendations collected from employers. To see the full course, click the link below:
